The Congress and the Poynter event take place in alternate years. They are held at venues throughout the UK.

All affiliated societies are represented on the Officers and Representatives Committee (ORC) of the BSHM. This committee and its elected officers run the affairs of the society including the organisation of the biennial congress.
Through its international representation, the BSHM influences affairs of the International Society for the History of Medicine (ISHM). Members receive information on ISHM meetings.
